Awakening

"I wake suddenly to the sound of battle. The prophesied Dragon Storms descend on our little valley
in a rush of rage, their war cries shattering the night. I shut my eyes against the stabbing explosions
of light and pray they will pass me by this time. The thick log walls of my home seem fragile compared
to the ravages out in the night and yet they continue to stand through the battle, keeping the destruction
out and my thoughts in. Eventually I fall back asleep as the dragons reluctantly flee the rising sun.

"When again I awake my cabin is still and intact. I lie for a few minutes and give thanks for my good fortune.

"And then I hear the cries."

Exposure

"I emerge blinking into the morning. The sounds of crying people are all around me. Fire and smoke fill
my eyes and bodies lie in my path. I walk silently past their wails and empty, imploring eyes. What can I
say? they should have heeded the prophecy.

"I head up toward the hills away from my home. Let it now be ta shelter for the wounded. Topping the rise I
look back on the valley I came to love. I regret I shall never return.

"My journey takes me to beyond the whtie mountsin to the west, to a land I've seen many times before. A land
with good people full of good intentions. But naive. I travel on, ever in the direction of the Dragon Storms.
I know I will never prevent the cataclysm they seek to embrace. yet I am fated to that endless geas."

Starvation

"I have come to a desert. the sun scorches my skin and dries out my soul. Nothing can be nourished in this
barren place and yet I know it is the destination of my journey. the dragons are here, I can feel them. And
I know they can feel me too. They know why I have come, just as they have always known those who came before me.
Why should my story end differently than theirs? We are all of the same blood and the same energy moves through us all.

"I move cautiously onto a plain between two towers of rock. Shadows flit about the rocks but when I look I see nothing.
Suddenly they are here, all around me, watching me, reading me. Judging me. My mind turns outward. I see a vast
history and the way things have always been. real things that my mind has not known. It is as if I view my own life
through another's eyes and with another's belief. I am judging myself.

"Light and sound build in a frantic crescendo in my mind as they watch and wait. Images of the past shoot through my
consiousness, becoming a blur. Gradually they coalesce into legacy and overwhelming purpose.

Desire

"There there is silence and clarity. Now the desert waits.

"We rise above the plain and begin to move away to the south, where the next scion lives."
